Some time ago, a website was considered as a less necessary cost for a Business. Why would a Business need a website? After understanding the importance of having a business website, companies start to deploy their own websites and are investing heavily in website optimisation. In the recent years, many companies are moving their conventional brick-and-mortar presence online.

If you are running a business, having an online presence has become a norm. To develop your website, it is always better to hire a freelance web developer as compared to an agency. An agency has overheads and hence the cost is normally higher. And because an agency works on multiple projects at a time, your project will not receive the full focus.

A Freelance Web Developer usually works on a project seriously as his/her reputation is at stake. This is the reason why most of the freelance web developers handle not more than one project at a time. A typical website project will take around 2 weeks to a month to complete, depending on the size of the website. However, this does not necessary be the case. With the different platforms available, you can easily have your website up in a couple of days, not weeks or months.

Common Platforms for Web Development:

WordPress:

WordPress (http://www.wordpress.org) is a free and open-source content management system (CMS) written in PHP and paired with a MySQL database. It contains features including plugins and a template system, referred to within WordPress as Themes. WordPress was originally created as a blog-publishing system but has evolved to support other types of web content including forums, media galleries, membership sites, learning management systems (LMS) and online stores.

Squarespace:

Squarespace (https://www.squarespace.com) is a website building and hosting company which is based in United States. It provides software as a service for website building and hosting, and allows users to use pre-built website templates and drag-and-drop elements to create and modify webpages.

Squarespace was initially built for creating and hosting blogs. E-commerce features were added later in 2013. More commerce features were then added and included a mobile version released in 2014.

Webflow:

Webflow (https://webflow.com) is the newer kid in the industry as compared to the other two. It is an American company, that provides software as a service for website building and hosting. Their online visual editor platform allows users to design, build, and launch websites. Using Webflow requires some basic knowledge around web structure and CSS. It allows users to use pre-built templates to create and modify webpages.

Q: Why would you need a freelance web developer with all these platforms?

Well, it’s best to have the businesses focus on what they are good at and let us worry about developing websites. Anyone could use these platforms, but the differences are the website coming out of it and the amount of time to put it together. With the available templates and the technologies equipped by the web developers, you will have a professional looking website in a matter of days. So why put yourself through the learning curve and hassle when you have an easy way out?
